The Old Fashioned is the blueprint for cocktail minimalism; a spirit, a sweetener, and bitters. First appearing in print in the early 1800s as a "whiskey cocktail," the drink eventually earned its “Old Fashioned” moniker in the late 19th century, a nod to drinkers who preferred the classic over newer, more elaborate concoctions. It’s a drink that’s stood the test of time, cherished for its balance, boldness, and simplicity.
While a traditional Old Fashioned leans on the complexity of whiskey for depth, this version gets its richness from the combination of Free Spirits Bourbon and maple syrup. Together, they create a bold, bittersweet profile that’s smooth, nuanced, and perfect for sipping.
Why go non-alcoholic? Because this riff gives you all the depth of a classic Old Fashioned with warming spice, bittersweet complexity, a touch of sweetness, and can be enjoyed all night long! It’s a cocktail built for evening wind-downs, lazy afternoons, or just a more mindful way to enjoy a bar-quality drink. The espresso note adds a robust layer that pairs beautifully with the oaky, spiced character of Free Spirits Bourbon, while the maple syrup ties everything together with a hint of Canadiana.
